A considered and sympathetic addition to a 12th century church.
The Reuthe Chapel of Rest is the result of an intensive examination of the topographical situation of the entire cemetery and church complex. The 12th century parish church stands on a hill, the cemetery is located on an artificial terrace, about 3 meters lower.
In order to be able to integrate the Chapel of Rest into the cemetery, it was necessary to enlarge it by extending the cemetery wall. The room was added to this new position, under the “church vestibule”. The existing quarry stone wall was removed, replaced by a dark coloured concrete wall and forms the outer entrance way of the ‘subterranean resting place’.
