Visiting the site

September 2024

On September 21, a site tour of the fifth phase of “Passive Town,” an eco-friendly residential project being developed by YKK in the city of Kurobe, took place.

“Passive Town” is a project by the YKK Group in Kurobe, aimed at utilizing renewable energy to promote sustainable urban development.

Extensive measures have already been implemented in the four completed phases. In the fifth phase, a multi-story residential building focused on energy storage is being constructed.

This will be the first multi-story wooden building in the Hokuriku region, with 87% of the building materials sourced from the prefecture. Additionally, as a first for residential buildings, a system will be installed to produce hydrogen using excess solar power, which will then be stored for energy use.

On September 20, the Austrian architect Hermann Kaufmann, who is responsible for the design, visited the site and spoke about the challenges, such as the use of concrete to enhance earthquake resistance.

The completion of this fifth phase is scheduled for March next year.

Ground breaking ceremony

“Mr. Yoshida became aware of us through one of my lectures in Japan, and now we have the pleasure of implementing this project for a globally leading manufacturer. It is a valuable experience for us to get to know people and their cultures through international projects, which is very enriching for us.””
